Ulleung County is located in the eastern part of South Korea and belongs to Gangwon Province. It is an island county consisting of Ulleung Island and its neighboring islets, and is located in the easternmost part of South Korea, across the Korea Strait from Japan, and about 217 kilometers away from Busan, making it the farthest administrative region from the mainland of South Korea. Ulleungdo is famous for its volcanic landscape and pristine ecology. The main peak, Sungak, is 984 meters above sea level, creating a unique volcanic landscape, and the island is home to rare plants such as Ulleungsong and Haejigusa, as well as natural wonders such as waterfalls and caves along the coastline, making it known as the "Island of the Honeymoon". The island is also known for its specialties such as Ulleungdo beef, seafood such as cuttlefish and kelp, and Ulleungdo ceramics, a traditional handicraft, and is an important destination for eco-tourism and patriotic education in Korea because of its dual significance as the actual jurisdiction of Dokdo, the island that is known as Dokdo in South Korea.
