Akrepattu is a town in the Northern Province of Sri Lanka, located in the southeastern part of the Jaffna Peninsula, about 60 kilometers from the capital city of Jaffna. The area is predominantly agricultural, producing coconuts and rice, and retains a strong Tamil cultural tradition. Historically a civil war-affected area, Akhlaipatu has gradually recovered and developed with several Hindu temples and colonial relics. Its location near the Indian Ocean has potential for coastal resource development.
The local economy is based on farming and fishing, and handicraft production is also quite distinctive. Religious buildings such as the Nalurkadavinayagar temple in Akrepattu reflect the South Indian Dharamvatiya style of architecture, and the annual Tamil festival attracts residents from the surrounding area. Due to its strategic location, the town plays a transit role in Sri Lanka's trade with India.
Mangrove forests and lagoon ecosystems surround Akrepattu, and the A32 highway connects the town to major cities such as Jaffna and Trincomalee. Infrastructure has gradually improved in recent years, but tourism development is still in its early stages, making it suitable for travelers exploring the pristine cultural landscape.
