Located in the Andijan Oblast in eastern Uzbekistan, Asaka is one of the country's major industrial cities. The city is situated in the fertile Fergana Basin, about 25 kilometers from Andijan, the capital of the Oblast, and is conveniently located for transportation. With a population of about 70,000, Asaka is predominantly Uzbek, Uzbek is spoken, and most of the inhabitants follow Islam.
The city is famous for its industry, especially automobile manufacturing. The General Motors Uzbekistan plant (now part of UzAuto), the first major automotive joint venture in Uzbekistan, was established here, producing Chevrolet and other brands, and is known as the "Motor City" of Central Asia. In addition, agro-processing, textile and food industries are the backbone of the economy. The climate is continental, with hot, dry summers and mild winters, making it suitable for agriculture, with cotton, fruit and other crops in abundance.
Dating back to Soviet times, Asaka was originally a small settlement that developed into a modern city as industrialization progressed. The city's culture is a blend of traditional Uzbek style and Soviet planning, with facilities such as mosques and museums, and a simple people's culture. As an important node in the Fergana region, Asaka plays a key role in promoting Uzbekistan's economic growth and regional cooperation.
