Sidi Bouzid is a city in central Tunisia, the capital of Sidi Bouzid Governorate, located in the southern foothills of the Atlas Mountains, in the heart of Tunisia's interior. The city is internationally known as the starting point of the Arab Spring movement, which began in 2010 with the self-immolation of the street Buazizi Jr. that triggered national protests. As the center of a traditionally agricultural region, the local economy is dominated by olive cultivation and cereal production, and relies on the distribution of agricultural products from the surrounding countryside. The city retains its typical North African Islamic architecture, and the old town souk still maintains its traditional trade atmosphere, where craftsmen make pottery, carpets and other specialty items. Despite modernization, Sidi Bouzid maintains a strong sense of North African vernacular culture and is an important window into the social changes taking place in the interior of Tunisia.
