Located in the northeastern part of Chubut Province, Argentina, Puerto Madryn is an important seaside city and deep-water port in Patagonia. Located on the south coast of San Matias Bay, with the Patagonian Plateau at its back and the Atlantic Ocean in its face, the city is famous for its magnificent coastal scenery and rich marine ecology.
Puerto Madryn is a whale-watching destination, where southern right whales can be seen breeding from June to December each year. The Punta Tombo Peninsula is home to hundreds of thousands of Magellanic penguins, making it an ecotourism highlight. Sea lion, dolphin, seabird and deep-sea fishing activities are available around the city, and the Valdez Peninsula is listed as a World Natural Heritage Site.
As the economic center of northern Patagonia, Puerto Madryn has developed fishing, aluminum and aquaculture industries based on its natural harbor. With its international airport and highway network, it is the gateway to the Valdés Peninsula and the Chubut River Canyon, and functions as an energy hub.
The city has a temperate continental climate, with temperatures ranging from 15-25°C in the summer (December-March), which is ideal for beach activities, and mild, windy winters. It is recommended to visit in September-November to see both wildlife and spring flowers.
