Makthar, Tunisia: The Pearl of North Africa's Ancient Roman Civilization
Makthar is a historic city in the northwestern Tunisian province of Kendu, located in the southern foothills of the Atlas Mountains, about 150 kilometers from the capital city of Tunis. With a history of more than 2,000 years, the city was once an important city of the Roman Kingdom of Numidia, originally known as "Mactaris", and flourished as a center of trade and religion. The city retains a wealth of Roman remains, including a 16,000-seat arena, public baths, triumphal arches and temple ruins, including the Temple of Juno Caelis, one of the best-preserved Roman temples in North Africa. Mexel is also a blend of Berber and Arab cultures, and the stone streets and traditional architecture of the old town show the clash of civilizations. As a site associated with the Tunisian World Heritage Site of Carthage, the city attracts history buffs and tourists alike, and is a must-visit for exploring the Roman civilization in North Africa.
