Sidi Bou Ali is a coastal town in the northeastern part of the Republic of Tunisia, about 20 kilometers south of the capital city of Tunis, and part of the Nabeul Governorate. The town is known for its long history, traditional handicrafts and beautiful Mediterranean scenery.
The history of Sidi Bouari dates back to the Phoenician period and there are archaeological remains from the Roman era. The town takes its name from the 13th-century Sufi saint Sidi Bou Ali, whose mausoleum remains an important religious site in the area. The town is famous for its traditional pottery crafts, especially blue-green glazed pottery and hand-carving, and is known as the "Pottery Capital of Tunisia".
The town is situated on the Mediterranean coast, with quiet beaches and typical Andalusian architecture. The main attractions include the traditional pottery workshops, the Ottoman-era old town (medina) and the fortified Ribat fortress, built in the 17th century. The International Pottery Festival, held every summer, attracts a large number of tourists and artists.
The economy is based on tourism, fishing and handicraft production. The region retains a strong sense of Mediterranean life, with markets where you can shop for specialty pottery, weavings and olive oil products. Tunis is about 30 minutes by train or cab from the city and is a popular day-trip destination.
