Located in the central part of the Eastern Region of Ghana, Akyem-Zwedru is an important town and commercial center in the region. Located in the Akyem Region, the town developed along the Accra-Kumasi Highway, which became a key transportation node connecting the southern coast of Ghana with the northern interior. The local economy is dominated by agricultural trade, with active distribution of agricultural products such as cocoa and palm oil, and small-scale gold mining in the surrounding area.
Akyem-Zwedru is historically a settlement of the Akan sub-clan, the Akyem people, and retains its traditional chieftaincy and cultural practices. The town's population is predominantly Akan, while commercial activities have attracted multi-ethnic residents, creating a multicultural atmosphere. Folk festivals, traditional music and dance are important manifestations of local culture.
As a regional center, Akyem-Zwedru has basic service facilities such as hospitals, schools, and markets to provide medical care, education, and trade support to the surrounding rural areas. Although the town is dominated by a traditional market style, in recent years, with the urbanization of Ghana, the infrastructure has been gradually improved, and it has become one of the important pivots to promote the development of the Eastern Region.
