Nurota is an ancient city in the Navoi region of Uzbekistan, located in the center of the country, about 90 kilometers from Samarkand. The city is known for its long history and unique natural landscape, and was one of the important stops on the Silk Road.
With over 2,500 years of history, Nuruta was once a border fortress of the ancient Persian Empire. The city's most famous landmarks are the Nuruta Mountains and the Chashma Spring, which, according to legend, was formed when the Prophet Muhammad's staff struck the ground and remains an important pilgrimage site in the region. In addition, the ruins of the nearby Alexandria Castle reflect historical traces of the Hellenistic era.
Nourotta is adjacent to the Nourotta-Kittoi Nature Reserve, which boasts an ecology unique to arid mountainous regions, where pan sheep and rare bird species are common. Visitors can experience the culture of traditional mountain villages and go on eco-tourism trips to nearby Lake Edalcourt. The city is also distinctive for its hand-woven carpets and pottery making.
As the agricultural and tourist center of Navoi Oblast, Nuruta is connected by road to major cities such as Samarkand and Bukhara. The local economy is based on animal husbandry, fruit cultivation and tourism, and in recent years it has been developing historical walking routes to attract international tourists.
