Located on the French part of the Caribbean island of St. Maarten, Princess Juliana International Airport is one of the region's busiest aviation hubs and one of the most unique airports in the world. The airport is named after the former Queen Juliana of the Netherlands, but its runway is adjacent to Maho Beach, which attracts a large number of tourists with the spectacular sight of airplanes taking off and landing low over the sand.
The airport is located in the southern part of St. Maarten in the French sector and serves the entire island (including Dutch St. Maarten). As an important gateway to the eastern Caribbean, it connects North America, Europe and neighboring islands, with more than 2 million passengers annually. The short length of the runway and the need for precision maneuvering of large airliners have created a unique aviation viewing culture.
Maho Beach has become a world-famous viewing spot for its low-altitude airplane overflights, allowing visitors to experience the thrill of airplane engine turbulence. The airport operates a mix of international flights and small inter-island airplanes, and has become an Internet sensation for its unique takeoff and landing challenges and beach safety tips, such as the sign "Jet Streams Can Be Deadly".
The airport's facilities are modern, offering duty-free stores, restaurants and observation deck services. Because the runway is adjacent to the sea, some areas are strictly managed to ensure safety, but efficient operations make it a key support for St. Maarten's tourism industry, blending transportation functions with tourist wonders.
