Sri Jayawardenapura Kotte is the administrative capital of Sri Lanka and is located in the country's Western Province, next to the largest city of Colombo, which became the political center of the country in 1982 when the Sri Lankan government relocated the parliament here. The name of the city means "Holy City of Victory", reflecting its historical and cultural significance.
The city is a well-planned and green city centered around the government offices and the parliament building. It is not a commercial or tourist center in the traditional sense, but rather focuses on the administrative affairs of the country. Its location close to the Kalu River and its relatively tranquil environment contrasts sharply with the bustling Colombo.
The development of Sri Jayawardenapura Kotte has its roots in late 20th century national planning to decentralize Colombo's administrative pressures. The city was designed with a focus on functional zoning and has modern government buildings and infrastructure. Although less well-known than Colombo, it has an irreplaceable role in the Sri Lankan political system as the center of national decision-making.
