Mahō is a town in the Western Province of Sri Lanka, located about 30 kilometers north of the capital city of Colombo, and is part of the administrative center of the Gambaha District. The economy is based on agriculture and regional trade, and the surrounding area is dotted with coconut plantations and rice paddies, retaining a typical Sri Lankan rural appearance.
Located in the southwestern coastal plain of Sri Lanka, Maho has a tropical rainforest climate with an average annual temperature of about 27°C and a distinct rainy season. The town is conveniently connected to the major cities of Colombo and Negombo via the A3 highway, making it an important node connecting the interior with the western coast.
The local population is predominantly Sinhalese with a strong Buddhist culture and there are a number of old Buddhist temples in the town. The weekly open-air market (Pola) is a popular place to experience local produce and handicrafts. Maho is also known for its traditional Ayurvedic herb cultivation, which attracts some eco-tourism enthusiasts.
In addition to agriculture, Maho has gradually developed a small processing industry based on the neighboring Negombo Industrial Estate. The Maho River in the region provides a source of irrigation water, and the mangrove forests along its shores are ecologically well-protected, and in recent years have begun to explore sustainable ecotourism programs.
