Poloporo is the capital of the Western Province of the Solomon Islands and is located on the shores of Kolo Bay on the island of New Georgia. As the administrative and commercial center of the Western Region, this coastal town is known for the pristine coral reefs and dense rainforests that surround it.
Poloporo is surrounded by world-class dive sites, including the famous Maravina Islands and Lorasi Island, where the remains of World War II shipwrecks and abundant marine life are preserved. The rainforest that backs the town is home to a wide range of endemic birds, showcasing the unique biodiversity of the Solomon Islands.
The local people make their living mainly from fishing, copra production and wood carving crafts. The Poloporo Market is an important place to experience local life, with fresh seafood and tropical fruits available at the regular weekly traditional market. The annual Shark Calling Ceremony in July is an important local cultural celebration.
Poloporo is connected to the capital city of Honiara by regular ferries and has an airstrip. Visitors can take part in eco-hikes, traditional canoe-making experiences, or visit nearby Skull Island to learn about World War II history. Its untouched nature makes it a popular destination for eco-tourism.
