Markatau, Kenya: A Quiet Town in the Hinterland of the East African Rift Valley
Markatau is located in the Rift Valley Province of west-central Kenya, at the eastern edge of the southern section of the East African Rift Valley, surrounded by vast savannahs and low hills, it is a typical East African inland town. The climate here is mild, with an average annual temperature between 20-28℃, and the dry and rainy seasons are clearly separated, which nurtures rich native vegetation. The local economy is based on agriculture and animal husbandry, with residents engaged in maize and sorghum cultivation and goat and sheep farming, and traditional handicrafts such as weaving and pottery making have retained strong local characteristics. Although far from Kenya's major tourist cities, the wildlife reserves around Marktau, such as Lake Nakuru National Park, offer eco-enthusiasts a gateway to explore the untouched grasslands of East Africa.
