Masalani, Kenya: A Diverse Landscape in a Northeastern Border Town
Masalani is a border town in Garissa County in northeastern Kenya, bordering Somalia and located in the arid and semi-arid Horn of Africa, and is an important economic and cultural node for the local community. The residents are predominantly Somali and Turkana, with traditional animal husbandry (camel, goat, sheep) as the mainstay industry, and most of the residents rely on pasture for their nomadic life. Although the town is small in size, it has a unique bazaar due to its border location, gathering agricultural and livestock products and handicrafts from the neighboring areas, and becoming a transit point for regional trade. Due to the climate, water resources are relatively scarce, but the local people rely on traditional knowledge to adapt to the environment, retaining a strong nomadic cultural characteristics.
