Macquarie Island is a remote outer island under the jurisdiction of the Australian state of Tasmania, located in the South Pacific Ocean about 1,500 kilometers south-east of Tasmania, and is a unique presence on the World Natural Heritage List. The island is renowned for its extraordinary geology - it is the only island on Earth where mantle rock rises out of the sea, and has rare pillow basalt and basalt column formations, making it an 'open-air museum of geology'. Macquarie Island is also an important breeding ground for millions of seabirds (such as royal penguins and royal penguins) and sub-Antarctic fur seals, and its ecosystems are pristine and fragile, so it is strictly protected and off-limits to tourists, and only open to scientific researchers. As one of Australia's southernmost territories, Macquarie Island is not only a model for nature conservation, but also a key area for the study of Earth's evolution and ecosystems.
