Muscle Shoals is one of the major cities in Lauderdale County, located in the northwestern part of the U.S. state of Alabama along the Tennessee River. The area is known for its rich musical history, and is known as the "Hit Record Capital of the World", with many legendary music productions from the 1960s and 1970s, attracting such stars as The Rolling Stones and Aretha Franklin to record in the area.
The city takes its name from the Tennessee River rapids area (Muscle Shoals). The economy is based on manufacturing, the music industry, and tourism, and is home to a major Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) facility. In terms of natural beauty, Lake Wilson and Pickwick Lake offer an abundance of water activities, while McGill-Chero State Park offers hiking and bird watching.
Conveniently located adjacent to Interstate 65, the Huntsville and Birmingham metropolitan areas are both within a two-hour drive. Averaging over 100,000 visitors annually, music studios such as FAME and Muscle Shoals Sound Studio remain pop culture landmarks to this day.
