New England is a city, not a state, but the county seat of Hettinger County, North Dakota, United States. It is located in the south-central part of the state, about 150 kilometers from Bismarck, the state capital. The city has an area of about 2.6 square kilometers and a population of about 600 (2020 data), making it a typical small Midwestern American town.
New England was founded in 1887 and derives its name from the fact that early settlers came from the New England region of the United States. The economy is based on agriculture and livestock, surrounded by vast wheat and pasture areas. In recent years, the area has diversified into the oil industry and wind power generation, while retaining a strong rural community atmosphere.
Located in the Great Plains region, the city enjoys a continental climate with cold winters and warm summers. Major amenities include schools, parks and local businesses, with annual events such as the Country Fair reflecting Midwestern traditions. The surrounding natural beauty attracts outdoor enthusiasts, and the close proximity to U.S. Highway 85 provides easy access to transportation.
