New Olinda is the capital of the African island nation of São Tomé and Principe, located in the northeastern part of the island of São Tomé, bordering the Gulf of Guinea. As the political, economic, and cultural center of the country, the city is known for its low-rise colonial-style buildings, lush tropical vegetation, and serene seaside scenery.
New Olinda was founded in the 16th century during the Portuguese colonial period and its name means "New Orleans". The city retains historical buildings such as the San Sebastian Fortress and the Presidential Palace, and the streets are laid out in a European style. The city is surrounded by cacao plantations and volcanic peaks, and is characterized by both natural and humanistic landscapes.
As the country's main port and trading hub, Nuevo Olinda has a concentration of government institutions, markets and fishing facilities. Tourists can visit the National Museum, the Central Market, or head to the nearby black sand beaches and Obo Nature Park for a unique equatorial island experience.
