Porto Alegre, located in the northwestern part of São Tomé, the main island of the Democratic Republic of São Tomé and Príncipe in the Gulf of Guinea, Africa, is an important port town and fishing center in the country. Its name means "happy port" in Portuguese, reflecting the peaceful seaside atmosphere of the area.

Location and economic characteristics

Porto Alegre is situated close to the capital city of São Tomé and has a natural deep-water harbor, making it one of the most important maritime hubs in São Tomé. The economy is based on fishing, ship repair and small-scale trade, and the local fishermen continue their traditional fishing methods, producing tuna, snapper and other seafood. Around the port, you can see colorful fishing boats and simple wharves, full of West African seaside style.

Natural and Human Landscape

The area is surrounded by dense rainforest and volcanic landscapes, and the famous Obo Natural Park is nearby. The population is mostly Creole, with Portuguese colonial architecture and a unique musical culture.
