Santa Catarina is a coastal town in the Lobata district of the African island nation of São Tomé and Principe, located in the southeastern part of the island of São Tomé. It is known for its Portuguese colonial architecture, fertile volcanic soil and tropical scenery, and was historically an important area for cocoa plantations.
Santa Catarina is situated on the coastline of the island of São Tomé, with its backdrop of dense tropical rainforest and facing the Gulf of Guinea. Surrounded by black volcanic beaches and rich marine life, the climate is tropical rainforest, warm and humid throughout the year, suitable for the growth of coconuts, cacao and other crops.
The local economy is based on agriculture and fishing, and produces agricultural products such as cocoa and coffee. It retains distinct traces of Portuguese culture, with colorful colonial-style houses intertwined with Catholic churches. Music and dance events are held every year during traditional festivals, showing the unique charm of Creole culture.
Visitors can explore the ruins of colonial estates, hike in the rainforest or experience sea fishing. The town is connected to the capital, São Tomé, by coastal road (about 1 hour by car), and there is no international airport, so you will need to transit through the city of São Tomé to reach it.
