Novi Sad, the second largest city in Serbia, is located in the northern part of the country in the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina, at the confluence of the Danube River and the Bačka Canal. As one of the cultural and economic centers of Serbia, Novi Sad is known as the "Athens of Serbia", with a rich historical heritage and a vibrant artistic scene.
The city's most famous landmark is the Petrovaradin Fortress, a 17th-century military fortress overlooking the Danube, where the EXIT music festival is held every July and attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors from all over the world. In the center of the Old Town, Freedom Square is surrounded by Baroque buildings, the Catholic Bishop's Palace and the Novi Sad Cathedral, which are characteristic of Austro-Hungarian architecture.
Novi Sad is the industrial hub of the Vojvodina region, with a focus on food processing, oil refining and machine building. As an educational center, it is home to Serbia's leading University of Novi Sad, whose 13 faculties train a large number of skilled professionals in the Balkans, and was selected as the European Capital of Culture in 2021, further boosting the cultural and tourism industries.
Visitors can stroll along the banks of the Danube, visit Strand Beach and the Vojvodina Museum. The city is connected to the capital, Belgrade, via the E75 highway (about an hour's drive), and with its international railroad lines and river ports, it is an important gateway for exploring northern Serbia.
