Pingelap Atoll: The Mysterious Color-Blind Island of the Federated States of Micronesia
Pingelap Atoll is a remote atoll in the state of Pohnpei, Federated States of Micronesia, located in the Caroline Islands in the western Pacific Ocean, consisting of about 20 small islands, with the main island, Pingelap, measuring only 1.2 square kilometers. The atoll is known for a unique genetic phenomenon - about 5% of the residents suffer from a rare form of total color blindness (achromatopsia), known as the "colorblind island", and the local people's special ability to adapt to bright light has become a hotspot for research.
