Port Elizabeth is the capital and main port city of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, located on the southwest coast of the island of St. Vincent. As the political, economic and cultural center of the country, the city is known for its natural deep-water harbor and colonial architecture. With a population of approximately 16,000, the climate is tropical maritime, warm and humid throughout the year.
The city, which takes its name from Queen Elizabeth II, retains 18th-century British colonial-style buildings such as St. George's Anglican Cathedral and Victoria Park. The local culture is a mix of African, Caribbean and European elements, and traditional celebrations such as Carnival are held annually.
The economy is based on banana exports and tourism, and the port is an important cargo hub in the Eastern Caribbean. Visitors can visit the Botanical Gardens (one of the oldest in the Western Hemisphere), the black volcanic beaches and use them as a base for diving or sailing trips to the Grenadines.
Backed by volcanic mountains and facing the Caribbean Sea, Port Elizabeth has an international airport and ferry connections to neighboring islands. The city is compact and the main attractions are within walking distance, making it an ideal starting point for exploring the islands of St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
