Located in the northwest of Beijing, China, Haidian District is an important part of the functional core area of the capital city, covering an area of 431 square kilometers with a resident population of about 3 million. As a national highland of science and technology innovation and culture and education, Haidian is known as "China's Silicon Valley" as it is home to more than 30 institutions of higher learning, including Peking University and Tsinghua University, as well as scientific research institutes such as the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Haidian is home to the Summer Palace, Yuanmingyuan and other world cultural heritages, as well as the Zhongguancun Science and Technology Park, China's first state-level high-tech industrial development zone. It is home to world-renowned technology companies such as Baidu and Lenovo, and accounts for a quarter of the country's annual technology contract turnover, making it an important innovation engine for the synergistic development of Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei.
With a well-developed transportation network, one of the highest subway line densities in Beijing, and important urban facilities such as the Wukesong Sports Center, the zone will have a GDP of more than one trillion yuan by 2022, and a per capita GDP at the level of developed economies, forming a unique development model of "science and technology+culture+education," which will continue to lead China's innovation-driven development strategy.
