Located about 70 kilometers south of Amman, Jordan's capital, Harabat Fortress is situated in a desert valley on the edge of the Karak Plateau. The fort was built during the Crusades in the 12th century, initially by the Crusaders to control the road to the Red Sea, and later expanded by the Mamluk dynasty to become an important military fortress along the southern route of the Silk Road.
The citadel is built in a typical Islamic military style, the main body of which is made of black basalt, with defense towers, cisterns and underground passages. It is unique in that it combines architectural elements from the Crusader, Mamluk and Ottoman periods, and was inscribed on UNESCO's reserve list of World Heritage Sites in 2015. The most complete surviving Mamluk-era mosque and Crusader dungeon are particularly valuable.
Today, Harabat Fort is an important stop on Jordan's "Castle Route" tourist route, where visitors can enjoy well-preserved arches, inscribed carvings and spectacular views over the Wadi Mujib Gorge. Through regular maintenance and archaeological research, the Jordanian Department of Antiquities continues to tell the world the story of this desert fortress, which has witnessed the meeting of Eastern and Western civilizations for millennia.
