Roncesvalles is a town in the autonomous community of Navarra, Spain, located in the western part of the Pyrenees Mountains, next to the French border. As the starting point of the Camino de Santiago (Pilgrimage Route to Santiago) in Spain, this town at an altitude of 900 meters is known for its deep historical and religious significance.
Roncesvalles went down in history for the Battle of Roncesvalles, recorded in the Song of Roland in 778 AD. The town preserves the 13th-century Colegio Real de Santa María (Royal Academy Church), which houses one of the oldest silver statues of the Virgin Mary in Europe. The Pilgrims' Museum, the Church of the Holy Spirit and the medieval stone bridge, among other monuments, together form its unique cultural landscape.
Surrounded by mountains and forests, the town is pleasantly cool in summer and often snow-covered in winter, creating a stunning mountainous landscape. Tens of thousands of pilgrims set out on the Santiago Trail from here each year, and the town offers traditional pilgrim lodging and specialty food services. Surrounding hiking trails and natural parks make it an ideal destination for outdoor enthusiasts.
