About South Georgia
South Georgia is a remote island in the South Atlantic Ocean, part of the British Overseas Territory of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands. It lies north of the Antarctic Convergence Zone and covers an area of approximately 3,755 square kilometers, and is known for its rugged mountains and glacial landscapes. There are no permanent residents on the island, and only British Antarctic Survey (BAS) researchers are stationed there on a seasonal basis.
Ecology and Historical Background
South Georgia is an important wildlife habitat with large populations of king penguins, seals and albatrosses. Historically the site of whaling stations (such as Grundtviken Station), abandoned sites remain.
