South Georgia is a remote island in the South Atlantic Ocean, part of the British Overseas Territory of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands. It lies north of the Antarctic Convergence Zone and covers an area of approximately 3,755 square kilometers, and is known for its rugged mountains and glacial landscapes. There are no permanent residents on the island, and only British Antarctic Survey (BAS) researchers are stationed there on a seasonal basis.
South Georgia is an important wildlife habitat with large populations of king penguins, seals and albatrosses. Historically the site of whaling stations (such as Grundtviken Station), abandoned sites remain. The gravesite of the famous explorer Shackleton is also located on the island, making it a symbolic landmark in the history of polar exploration.
The island has a cold and windy climate and can only be visited by research vessels or licensed tour boats. All visitors are subject to strict biosecurity protocols to prevent the introduction of exotic species. The British Antarctic Heritage Trust is involved in the management of the island, focusing on the protection of its unique ecosystems and historic sites.
