Akhal-Karaki is a town in the Samtskhe-Zavakheti region of southern Georgia, located in the hilly region of the Lesser Caucasus Mountains, near the Turkish border. It has a long history, having been one of the cultural centers of the medieval kingdom of Samtskhe, and is rich in religious and military monuments, such as the Akhal-Karaki Castle, built in the 10th century.
The town has a population of around 2,000 and its economy is based on agriculture and livestock farming, producing cereals, potatoes and dairy products. In recent years there has been a gradual growth in tourism, and tourists often use it as a base for exploring the surrounding natural landscapes and historical sites.
Akhal-Karaki is characterized by a multicultural mix, with Georgians, Armenians and other ethnic groups coexisting. Nearby attractions include the Sapara Monastery and the cave city of Vardzia for travelers who love history and hiking. The climate is mild, and spring and fall are the best times to visit.
