Akhaltsikhe is located in the Samtskhe-Zavakheti region of southwestern Georgia and is the capital of the region, situated on the banks of the Potshovi River, a tributary of the Kura, about 200 kilometers from the capital city of Tbilisi. The historic city is about 1,000 meters above sea level and has a population of about 20,000, known for its multicultural background and strategic location.
The founding of Akhaltsikhe dates back to the Middle Ages and was once the center of the Principality of Samtsikhe. The most famous landmarks within the city are the Akhaltsikhe Fortress and the Rabat Castle, the latter of which is a fusion of Georgian, Ottoman and Russian architectural styles, reflecting its unique position as a hub of Eurasian transportation. The local population consists of Georgians, Armenians and Azerbaijanis, resulting in a rich religious and folkloric tradition.
The economy is based on agriculture and tourism, with the surrounding mountains producing grapes and cereals. In recent years, the restoration of the Rabat Castle has attracted a large number of international tourists, boosting the local service sector. The city's proximity to UNESCO heritage sites such as the Vardzia Cave Monastery makes it an ideal base for exploring Georgia's history and natural beauty.
