Mekelle, Ethiopia: Ancient Center of the Tigrayan Highlands
Mekelle, the capital of the Tigray region in northern Ethiopia, sits on a plateau 2,023 meters above sea level and is an important political, economic and cultural center of the country. As the heart of the Tigray region, Mekelle has a long history as a trading hub for the ancient kingdom of Axum, and still retains a number of historical monuments, such as 19th century palaces and churches. The city enjoys a pleasant climate, has a well-developed agricultural and handicraft industry, and is also an important transportation node connecting Ethiopia with neighboring countries such as Eritrea.
