Brasilia: Brazil's Modernist Capital
Brasilia is the capital of the Federative Republic of Brazil, located in the central plateau of the country, and officially replaced Rio de Janeiro as the country's political center in 1960. The city is known for its unique urban planning and architecture, designed by the famous architect Oscar Niemeyer and urban planner Lucio Costa, and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.
The city is laid out in the shape of an airplane and is divided into administrative, commercial and residential areas, with core landmarks including the Capitol, the Presidential Palace and the Supreme Court. As the political hub of Brazil, Brasilia's economy is dominated by government services, with a population of about 3 million and a mild, dry climate with an average annual temperature of about 21°C. Despite its relatively short history, the city attracts tourists and architecture enthusiasts from around the globe with its modernist architecture and functional design.
