Cyangugu is the capital city of Rwanda's Western Province, located on the north-eastern shore of Lake Kivu, adjacent to the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo. As the fourth largest city in Rwanda, Cyangugu is located at an altitude of about 1500 meters above sea level and has a tropical highland climate with an average annual temperature of about 20°C. The city is located on the northern shore of Lake Kivu.
The city is situated in the volcanic hills and is surrounded by two ecological treasures, Nyunwe National Park (Africa's largest mountainous rainforest) and Lake Kivu. It is rich in biodiversity and famous for its primate tracking and bird-watching activities, making it an important gateway for ecotourism.
Cyangugu's economy is dominated by agriculture, producing coffee, tea and highland fruits. Tourism has grown rapidly in recent years, building on the volcanic lake landscape and the Nyunwe forest trekking trail, and has become a central hub of Rwanda's Western Tourism Circuit.
The city has preserved the unique Rwandan traditional dances and handicrafts, and the weekly open-air market is full of ethnic flavors. The city's infrastructure is well developed, with the largest referral hospital in Western Rwanda and several higher education institutions.
The city is connected to the capital Kigali (3 hours by car) via the RN2 highway, and is only 15 kilometers from the Rwanda-Congo border crossing. The city is well planned, with red brick buildings and greenery, and is known as the "Emerald City of a Thousand Hills".
