Białystok is the largest city in northeastern Poland and the capital of the Podlaskie voivodship, situated on the banks of the Narew River near the Belarusian border. Founded in the 14th century as a stronghold of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, the historic city enjoyed a cultural boom in the 18th century under the rule of Count Branicki, whose magnificent Branicki Palace was known as the "Versailles of Podlaskie". As a place of multiculturalism, Białystok was once home to Jewish, Polish, and Belarusian communities, and today is rich in historical buildings and museums, such as the Podlaskie Museum and the Center for Jewish Cultural Heritage. It is also an important educational center, with renowned institutions such as the Białystok Medical University, and a quarter of the city is covered with greenery, making it known as the "Green City", which combines history and modernity.
