Diego Garcia is the largest atoll in the British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT), located in the central Indian Ocean at latitude 7 degrees 20 minutes south and longitude 72 degrees 25 minutes east. The island is under the jurisdiction of the British Overseas Territories, but is mainly used as a joint British and American military base with no permanent residents.
