The western Slovak city of Hlohovec (often translated as Hlohovec in Chinese) is located on the banks of the Váh River in Trenčín oblast, has a population of about 23,000, and dates back to the 11th century. The old town retains monuments such as the 16th-century Renaissance castle and the Baroque church of St. Mary, which houses a history museum. The local economy is based on machine building, food processing and agriculture, and the city is well connected to major cities such as Bratislava and Žilina. The city is surrounded by vineyards and hosts an annual wine festival that combines traditional Slovak folklore with modern life, making it one of the most important stops when visiting western Slovakia.
