Mazar-i-Sharif
Mazar-i-Sharif is the largest city in northern Afghanistan, the capital of Balkh Province, and an important transportation and economic center located near the border with Uzbekistan. The city is famous for the Blue Mosque (the shrine of Ali Ibn Abi Talib), an important Shia shrine that attracts a large number of pilgrims every year. As a trade node connecting Central and South Asia, the local economy is dominated by agriculture, handicrafts and cross-border trade. Despite security challenges, Mazar-e-Sharif remains an important symbol of Afghanistan's cultural and religious fusion, with a rich multicultural history dating back to the time of Alexander's empire.
