Meydan Shahr is the capital of Wardak Province, Afghanistan, located about 40 km southwest of the country's capital, Kabul, in the valley of the northern foothills of the Hindu Kush Mountains, and is the political, economic and cultural center of Wardak Province. With a population of about 150,000, the city is predominantly inhabited by Pashtuns and Tajiks, and is predominantly agricultural in the region, producing wheat, corn, and fruits, as well as serving as a regional trade hub connecting the surrounding countryside to the markets of Kabul. Maidan Shahr has been strategically important in Afghanistan's recent history, and after the trauma of war, has in recent years gradually moved forward with the reconstruction of its infrastructure, including the restoration of schools and medical facilities, making it one of the key nodes of development and stabilization in central Afghanistan.
