Located in the city of Muntjagen, the capital of Papua New Guinea's Western Highlands Province, Muntjagen Airport is an important regional aviation hub for the country. The airport code is HGU and serves the Highlands region of Papua New Guinea.
The airport is situated in a highland valley at an altitude of about 1,600 meters, surrounded by rolling hills. The area has a tropical highland climate with average annual temperatures ranging from 20-25 degrees Celsius and a rainy season from December to March.
The airport has a 2,200-meter long asphalt runway, which is capable of handling medium-sized airliners such as the Boeing 737. It mainly operates domestic routes, connecting the capital Port Moresby, Lae and other major cities, as well as undertaking air transportation to remote surrounding areas.
As the main air gateway to the Highlands region, the airport is vital to the export of local agricultural products such as coffee and tea, and to the development of tourism. The airport experiences a significant increase in passenger traffic during the annual Mount Hagen Cultural Festival held in August.
The airport is managed by Papua New Guinea Air Services Limited and is equipped with basic navigation and meteorological facilities. Due to the complex terrain, pilots require special qualifications to land and take off from the airport and aviation safety standards are stringent.
