Muntjagen is the capital of the Western Highlands Province of Papua New Guinea, located in the Central Highlands region of the island of New Guinea at an altitude of about 1,600 meters above sea level. As the third largest city in the country, it is the economic, transportation and cultural center of the Western Highlands, known for its active surrounding volcanoes and fertile agricultural land.
The city got its name from the nearby Mount Hagen volcano and grew in the 1930s as a result of coffee farming by Australian colonists. Home to hundreds of Aboriginal tribes, the city is famous for its colorful "Hagen Show" ethnic festival, an annual event that attracts visitors from around the world to see traditional dances, costumes and tribal cultural displays.
The economy of the Muntjagen is based on coffee farming, tea production and gold mining. The surrounding Highlands region is rich in mineral resources such as copper and gold, and has a unique mountain rainforest ecosystem, making it an important agricultural export hub for Papua New Guinea.
The city is connected to major cities in the country through the Munterhagen Airport, a key gateway to the tribal culture and volcanic landscape of the Highlands. Visitors can explore traditional tribal markets, volcano hiking trails and experience one of the most culturally diverse regions in the world.
