Maracuane is the capital of Gaza Province in southern Mozambique, located along the lower Limpopo River, about 100 kilometers from the Indian Ocean coast. As the administrative and commercial center of the region, the city has a predominantly agrarian economy, with cashew nuts, cotton and maize being produced in the surrounding area. The climate is savannah with distinct dry and rainy seasons.
Once an important Portuguese colonial stronghold, Maracuane retains a unique mix of colonial architecture and traditional local thatched roofs. The city's name means "place of peace" in the local dialect, and its inhabitants, mainly Shangaan, retain a rich culture of traditional dance and handicrafts.
Located in the heart of Mozambique's agricultural plains, Maracuane is connected to the capital city of Maputo and cities in the north by the EN1 highway. In recent years, it has developed into a regional distribution center for agricultural products and has small agro-processing enterprises based on the irrigation system of the Limpopo River Basin.
Although not a mainstream tourist destination, Malakwane serves as a refresher stop on the way to the nearby Banhine National Park. The city is attracting investment through infrastructure improvements and could become an important node in the future for border trade between Mozambique and South Africa.
