Located in the central state of Uttar Pradesh, India, Mewana is an important town in Bareilly district, about 250 kilometers from the capital city of Lucknow. The city is situated in the hinterland of the Ganges Plain and has a typical North Indian tropical monsoon climate.
The name of Mewana is derived from the Sanskrit word "Madhavana" meaning "abode of Lord Krishna". It was a regional trading hub during the medieval period and developed into an artisanal town during the reign of the Mughal Empire, with many remnants of colonial architecture surviving.
The city is globally renowned for its hand-knotted carpet manufacturing industry, utilizing a unique Persian weaving technique, and the annual production of woolen carpets accounts for 15% of India's total exports. Characterized by a blend of Mughal floral motifs and geometric designs, the products are exported to high-end markets in Europe and the United States.
Modern-day Mewana has become a small-scale industrial center in Uttar Pradesh, with agro-processing industries in addition to carpets. It is connected to the main Delhi-Lucknow railroad line through National Highway 24 and has a special bonded zone for export of handicrafts.
