Mewarana is a historic town in the Udaipur district of Rajasthan, India, located in the hilly terrain of the Aravali Mountains. Famous for its heroic Rajput traditions, the town derives its name from Maharaja Mewar Singh (Mewar Rana), meaning "ruler of the Mewar region". Historically a strategic stronghold of the Mewar Kingdom, it retains the ruins of a 16th-century fort and a cluster of Jain temples.
Mughlana is located at an altitude of about 500 meters above sea level and has a dry and hot climate, surrounded by step wells and traditional step farms. The area is famous for its hand-dyed textiles, metal crafts and miniature paintings, and a folk dance festival held each spring attracts many visitors. The economy is predominantly agricultural, with corn, wheat and medicinal plants being the main crops, and ecotourism has gradually developed in recent years.
The town is connected to the city of Udaipur (distance 80 kilometers) by a national highway, and the nearest railroad junction is located in Mathura. It has a population of about 25,000 inhabitants and still maintains a traditional community governance model. It was included in the Indian Heritage Towns Revival Program in 2018 and is working on a project for restoration of ancient buildings and sustainable tourism development.
