Huangzhong is located in the eastern part of China's Qinghai Province, a district under the jurisdiction of Xining City, situated in the transition zone between the Tibetan Plateau and the Loess Plateau, with an average altitude of about 2,700 meters. It is known for its diverse culture, religious heritage and natural beauty, making it an important cultural tourism destination in Qinghai.
Huangzhong is a holy place of Tibetan Buddhism, with the world heritage site of Thar Monastery (built in 1560), the birthplace of Master Tsongkhapa, the founder of the Gelugpa school.
