Nyakonashuk, Greenland: a fishing town on the ice sheet
Nyakonashuk (Narsaq) is located in southwestern Greenland, near Tarsila Bay, and is one of the most important towns in southern Greenland. Known for its spectacular glacier and fjord scenery and rich fishing industry, the town has a population of about 1,500, mostly Inuit. The local economy is based on fishing for cod, shrimp and other seafood, while gradually developing eco-tourism to attract tourists to experience the polar culture. Summers are short but bright, ideal for hiking and exploring the surrounding tundra and glacial remnants, while winters are characterized by the splendor of the Northern Lights. As one of the few settlements in Greenland that has retained its traditional way of life, Nyakonashuk is a unique example of people living in harmony with nature.
