Port-au-Prince, the capital and largest city of the Republic of Haiti, is located on the western side of the Caribbean island of Haiti on the shores of the Gulf of Gonaïves and is the political, economic, cultural and transportation center of the country. The city was founded in 1749, replaced Port-au-Prince as the capital in 1770, and has shown resilience despite the devastation of the 2010 earthquake. As Haiti's most important port city, Port-de-Paix dominates the country's trade, exporting agricultural products such as coffee, sugar, and cocoa, and its industry is based on sugar, textiles, and food processing. With a population of approximately 2.8 million, the city is one of the most historically and culturally diverse in the Caribbean, with a unique blend of African, European and indigenous cultures, voodoo traditions, colonial architecture and vibrant street art.
