Gonaïves, the capital of Haiti's Artibonite Department and the country's third-largest city, is located on the western shores of the Gulf of Gonaïves and is an important port and agricultural center for Haiti. As the "City of Independence", Haiti declared its independence here in 1804, becoming the birthplace of the world's first black republic, with a remarkable historical status. Sugar cane, coffee, cotton and other crops are grown around the city, and the regional economy is supported by the port trade. Despite the challenges of natural disasters, Gonaïves retains a strong Creole culture, and the annual Carnival attracts many tourists, epitomizing Haiti's history and modern development.
