Porto-Novo, Benin is the official capital of the West African country of Benin, located in the south-east of the country on the Gulf of Guinea. As the administrative center, it is about 40 km away from the economic capital Cotonou, and together they form the core of the country's governance. The city's name is derived from the Portuguese word for "new port", reflecting its colonial past.
Porto Novo was founded at the end of the 16th century as a Portuguese trading post, then became the capital of the French colony, and then the capital of Benin when it gained independence in 1960. The city is a blend of Yoruba culture, colonial architecture and traditional African styles, with monuments such as the Brazilian-style buildings and the Sacred Palace, which is on UNESCO's Tentative List of World Heritage Sites.
The city's economy is based on agriculture, handicrafts and palm oil processing, and although it is not a major economic hub, it serves as a political center hosting government institutions. It has a population of about 250,000 and a tropical rainforest climate with abundant annual precipitation. Its unique historical position and cultural diversity make it an important tourist and educational center for Benin.
