Verkhovtsevo is a municipal town in Donetsk Oblast, eastern Ukraine, located about 60 kilometers south of the city of Donetsk, the capital of the oblast. Located on the banks of the Kalmykus River, the town is part of the Donbass region and has historically been economically based on the coal industry. Its name is derived from the Ukrainian word "Верхівцеве", meaning "upstream place".
Verkhovtsevo covers an area of about 15 square kilometers and is situated at an altitude of about 200 meters above sea level, with a temperate continental climate. According to the latest data, the population of Verkhovtsevo is about 10,000 people, mainly Ukrainians and Russians, who speak Ukrainian and Russian. The town retains a Soviet-era layout of industrial buildings and residential areas, and has a prominent railroad junction connecting the cities of Donetsk and Mariupol.
The town's economy has long been dependent on the nearby coal mines and coking plants, and has faced the challenge of transforming itself in the 21st century as a result of industrial decline. The Verkhovtsevo railway station is an important regional freight hub for the transportation of coal, steel, and other materials, and since 2014, the war in the Donbas has caused severe damage to the local infrastructure, hindering economic development and causing some residents to move to other areas.
There are primary and secondary schools, hospitals and other basic public facilities in the town, and traditional festivals follow Orthodox customs. Due to its location on the front line of the conflict, the current supply of living materials is unstable, and the United Nations and other organizations often provide humanitarian assistance. Despite these difficulties, the local community is trying to maintain its daily life and preserve its cultural heritage.
