Baku, the capital and largest city of the Republic of Azerbaijan, is located on the southern tip of the Apsheron Peninsula on the western shore of the Caspian Sea and is known as the "Dubai of the Caucasus". With a population of more than 5 million, the city is the political, economic and cultural center of the country.
The Old City of Baku (Icherisheher), which was inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 2000, preserves monuments such as the 12th century Maiden's Tower and the Shirvanshah Palace. At the same time, modern buildings such as the Flame Tower and the Heydar Aliyev Cultural Center demonstrate the city's innovative development. Baku is known as the "Oil City" due to its rich oil resources, and the oil industry has shaped the city's economy from the 19th century to the present day.
As a major hub connecting Europe and Asia, Baku is home to a wide range of cultural influences, including Turkic, Persian and Russian. The city hosts international events such as the Formula 1 Grand Prix and the European Games every year, and in 2019 it will host the Champions League final, underscoring its growing international influence. The warm and dry climate, the Caspian Sea promenade and specialty lamb cuisine make it a unique tourist destination.
